Ortega Elementary School Program

MESSAGE FROM THE PRINCIPAL

It is our intent to provide the best educational program for our families.  In mathematics and language arts, in science and history, and in the visual and performing arts, our staff has developed a challenging and creative curriculum to stimulate thinking and develop academic skills.

Ortega Elementary School has a long history of community involvement and service founded on a close alliance with our students’ families.  Our academic excellence and spirited programs are the result of families and staff working together: gardening projects, performing arts and art productions, thematic units, and community outreach.  Our goal is to increase all student achievement with emphasis on literacy and mathematics.  We find the resources to accomplish our goals with the strength of our Parent Teacher Organization and innovative faculty.

Please join our school community to make this another outstanding year for nurturing our children.

Ortega Elementary School emphasizes literacy in the primary grades.  Classrooms have libraries of grade-level books to support reading.  Teachers use the latest "best practices" teaching strategies to help students achieve content standards in English and Language Arts.  Our mathematics curriculum is a concept-based program utilizing many hands-on activities to cultivate an understanding of arithmetic principles.  Writing is an on-going student activity, involving monthly prompts and daily practice.
For intermediate students, our curriculum fosters independent learners, able to research, compose, write, and report on discoveries in math, literature, science, and history.
The following services are offered to our students:

šTake-home books in primary grades
šVolunteers trained to provide literacy instruction
šClassroom Technology Centers
šOn-site child care
š
A School Library
šAfternoon activities in Dance, Chess, Science, and Sports
šEnriched Visual and Performing Arts Instruction
