Sunset Ridge Elementary School has
a strong curriculum with an emphasis on literacy/language
arts and mathematics. Literacy is the foundation for
learning and is therefore the key program focus at Sunset
Ridge. Funded by a large grant from the Robert Noyce
Foundation, the school has additional literacy training
for its teachers with materials and additional staff
to help coach teachers. Serving an ethnically diverse
population, all teachers at Sunset Ridge have been trained
to provide targeted instruction based on individual
needs. Technology enhances the curriculum. Each classroom
has computers that are used to support, integrate, and
strengthen curriculum under the direction of the teacher.
Recognizing the importance of serving
the whole child, Sunset Ridge has additional support
for its families and students with after school tutorials,
an additional Reading Recovery teacher, on-site counseling
services, and a community outreach worker who helps
support families to access needed services and resources.
The Pacifica Collaborative provides funding and services
to assist with the site’s emphasis on the whole
child. Sunset Ridge provides a breakfast program and
boasts two on-site daycare providers to meet the needs
of working parents.

Located in a small valley in the center
of Pacifica, Vallemar School offers a “structured”
program. The distinguishing characteristics of this
school are a strong emphasis on academics and citizenship,
one grade per classroom, teacher directed instruction,
and frequent reporting to parents. The school’s
parent community is very active, providing a family
atmosphere at the school.
In keeping with the school’s traditional
philosophy of education, academic instruction is concentrated
in the core subject areas. Music, art, technology, and
other subjects are included in the curriculum. Enrichment,
remediation, and individualization are also available,
but the main focus remains on whole group grade level
instruction in the academic areas. Vallemar is one of
four district schools that participates with the Bay
Area School Reform Collaborative in a program designed
to ensure that every child is a successful reader. As
a result of this strong foundation, Vallemar graduates
have traditionally done well in high schools and colleges.
In 1997, Vallemar School was recognized
by the State as a California Distinguished School.
