Ways
To Volunteer
Weekly volunteers: Volunteers work with
children one-on-one or in small groups, helping them with
reading, math or other classroom activities. We provide an
orientation for all new volunteers. This year, we are offering
Math training
Art, Music, Drama, and Physical Education Volunteers:
Art, music and drama volunteers in classrooms enrich the education
of children who do not have much exposure to the arts. This
can be a one time visit, or a series visits. Classrooms also
need volunteers to lead Physical Education classes.
Read Aloud Volunteers: In celebration of
books and literacy, we hold Read Aloud Day in which community
members visit classrooms and share a favorite story or book
with children. Volunteers are needed to participate in Read
Aloud Day.
Oceana High School Senior Exhibition: In
collaboration with the Pacifica Chamber of Commerce, we recruit
volunteers to assist in evaluating senior high school projects.
This project involves reading the student’s research
paper, attending training (March 10, 2010) and their oral
presentation (March 19th, 2010) and assisting the teacher
in evaluating the project.
Junior Achievement. Junior Achievement is
a non-profit organization that has developed curriculum to
educate children on economics, business and succeeding in
global economy. Business and community leaders present the
provided curriculum once a week for five weeks. www.ja.org
Kinder-Camp (summer) Each summer, Pacifica
School District offers a camp to prepare incoming kindergarteners
for school. Adult and high school volunteers help the teacher
in the classroom.
High School Students. In after-school homework
centers, high school students help elementary school students
complete homework assignments. High school students also help
teachers in their classrooms after school by grading papers,
preparing materials, and other clerical tasks.
AVID (Advancement Via Individual Determination)
is an elective class at IBL Middle School. The mission of
AVID is to support students in order to succeed in a rigorous
curriculum. Stepping stone to college by providing tools to
succeed in school. PSV recruits volunteers to help with in
class tutoring. http://www.ed.gov/pubs/ToolsforSchools/avid.html
Help with Special Events. Volunteers are
needed to work behind the scenes preparing for events such
as sorting books for book sale, stuffing envelopes for direct
mail piece, etc.
To make the experience as rewarding as possible, we make
every effort to accommodate preferences you have, such as
the age of the children you will be helping, or subject areas
you prefer. If you have other ideas for volunteering, we’ll
be happy to discuss them.
