Pacifica School District 2009-2010 California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) Results*

The CHKS and youth development principles align well with key components of 21st Century Education assessing three developmental supports that promote resilience and as protective factors that positively influence student outcomes by:

 

 

 

 

The CHKS provides a theoretical framework to support  student health and wellness as a youth development process. In Pacifica School District improved health, social and academic development and functioning are desired outcomes – believing the successful development of students depends on the quality of relationships, beliefs, and opportunities for participation. Mindful of this our system strives to promote and nurture:

 

External Assets (Protective Factors) in the Home, School, Community, and

Peer Group*

 

Caring Relationships:

    Supportive connections to others; someone who is "there“; and someone who listens non- 

    judgmentally

 

High Expectations:

    Consistent communication of messages that the student can and will succeed; belief in  

    youth's innate resilience; Youth-centered support; and strengths-focused

 

Meaningful Participation:

    Involvement of student in relevant, engaging and interesting activities; and opportunities for  

    responsibility and contribution
