Pacifica School District 2009-2010 California Healthy Kids Survey (CHKS) Results*

The CHKS and youth development principles align well with key components of 21^st Century Education assessing three developmental supports that promote resilience and as protective factors that positively influence student outcomes by:

• Promoting positive academic, social, and healthy outcomes among youth

• Creating positive working environments—caring relationships

• High expectations, and opportunities for meaningful participation

The CHKS provides a theoretical framework to support student health and wellness as a youth development process. In Pacifica School District improved health, social and academic development and functioning are desired outcomes – believing the successful development of students depends on the quality of relationships, beliefs, and opportunities for participation. Mindful of this our system strives to promote and nurture:

Caring Relationships:

Supportive connections to others; someone who is "there“; and someone who listens non-

judgmentally

High Expectations:

Consistent communication of messages that the student can and will succeed; belief in

youth's innate resilience; Youth-centered support; and strengths-focused

Meaningful Participation:

Involvement of student in relevant, engaging and interesting activities; and opportunities for

responsibility and contribution
